IAST 290 Sophomore Seminar Spring 2026: According to the UN Universal Declaration of Human Rights, one has a fundamental right to leave one's country of origin (1948, Article 13), yet there is no corresponding right to enter another.  Our seminar considers the consequences of this tension by focusing on how and why states encourage some immigrants while preventing and discouraging others.  We will thus explore some of the empirical data, ethical challenges, gendered dimensions and political movements that both inform and result from the decisions of states and other actors.  We will conclude with normative reflections about who should be allowed entry to and citizenship within (other) states.  Upon the course's completion, students will be able to engage with key concepts and competing claims concerning broad patterns of global migration from the twentieth century to the present with attention to their intended study abroad sites. Open to Sophomore IAST majors only.
